Who says dogs can’t have brownies? While of course traditional style brownies are off limits for our canine companions, I have a dog-friendly brownie recipe to share with you today that is both super healthy and dog drool worthy. These Sardine and Sweet Potato Brownies for Dogs are chock full of omega-3 fatty acids from sardines as well as fiber, phytonutrients and antioxidants from sweet potato and my go-to grain-free superfood, buckwheat.
These Sardine and Sweet Potato Brownies for Dogs are the perfect treat for when your dog craves something a little extra special and may be getting bored of the traditional style dog cookie.
Let’s take a look at some of the superfoods found in this recipe.
- Sardines: Although we may never think about making brownies for ourselves with sardines, dogs go absolutely crazy for them – especially when baked into a special treat! And the best part is that your dog won’t even know how healthy they are! Sardines are rich in the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are great for combatting inflammation while also giving our dogs’ skin and coat a nice shiny boost. The essential fatty acids found in sardines are also heart healthy and are great for brain health.
- Buckwheat Flour: I have been including lots of treat recipes on my blog lately that include buckwheat flour. I love using this as a much healthier option to treats that contain grains, especially for dogs with a grain sensitivity. Buckwheat is known as a “superfood” for its many nutritional benefits, including containing a wide range of important minerals and stabilizing blood sugar.
- Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potatoes are a great source of dietary fiber, but they are also rich in antioxidants to help keep inflammation at bay. It’s important that we pack our dogs’ diets with wholesome foods that can help protect their bodies from disease and sweet potatoes are a great addition. They are also delicious and help to keep these brownies from drying out!
